Integrity on the Cheap

This morning I was making a deposit at the bank. It was a personal trip. I had written out the deposit slip and was patiently waiting for my receipt. I don’t know if other people do this, but I try to always check the deposit to make sure it’s right. It’s not that I don’t trust the folks at the bank. I just know that mistakes can be made. Well, this morning a mistake was made, but it was made in my favor.

I was about to pull off and I noticed that there was too much money on my receipt. I had a decision to make (well, not really. I knew what I needed to do). I pressed the “call” button and asked the cashier to double-check the checks I had given. She looked slightly confused. I’m guessing she doesn’t continue conversations after the exchange has been completed. But, I digress.

I informed her that there was too much money. But here is the thing. It wasn’t $1,000, or even $100. It wasn’t even $10. She had given me six cents too much. That’s right, .06¢.

You know what stunned me though? I didn’t even hesitate to tell the lady behind the window that too much money was going to be credited to my account. I surprised myself. I’m not sure why, but it did.

I will admit that I have had moments where I sold my integrity on the cheap. I have allowed things to slide and even made decisions that I knew were not right. But, I am thankful that I am growing. I am thankful that as I have gotten older (and hopefully wiser) I am not willing to sell out for something as “small” and “trivial” as six cents.

Because, here is the thing about integrity, you are the judge. You and I are the ones that make the decisions that we have to live with. We are the ones that know what really happened. Don’t sell your integrity on the cheap. It’s not worth it.
