Lent Day #5 | Running as if to Win

1-cor-9_24

I have often read these words and have wondered what it must be like to run for the prize. I am not a runner. I am not much of anything that could be described as athletic. So, it can be difficult at times for me to understand some of the images that Paul used.

This morning I came across a story of a young lady named Kayla Montgomery. She has been diagnosed with Multiple Schlerosis, a disease that literally makes the body fight itself. She is a cross-country runner who must give her all every single race if she is going to become a champion. This is what struck me. Running as if to win the prize is not about our physical or intellectual abilities. Those who win are those that have made a decision in their hearts that they will never quit or retreat. The drive to push through pain and suffering is not merely a choice, it is a conviction that will simply not go away.

As you watch Kayla’s story ask yourself: Am I serving Jesus because I won’t do anything else? Or am I serving Jesus because of some blessing I think I will receive?
