5 Lessons to Reflect on after the 2016 Election

After one of the most historic political seasons in US history, I am taking some time to think about about what I have learned over the last two years.

When we were growing up and we made a mistake, my father always asked us, “What did you learn?” When we could answer the question we would not be disciplined because a lesson was learned. If we could not, we could expect to get in trouble.

And, the answer could not be a bull crap answer either. We had to reflect and understand how and why we did what we did, so that we could say why it was not the right thing to do.

Here are the five lessons.

1. When you make assumptions you will get yourself into trouble.
2. When you think you understand something (when you really don’t) you will feel incredibly disappointed.
3. When you think you are right and are not open to the possibility that you are not, you will become bitter.
4. When you take things too personally and can’t separate feelings from people, you will become resentful.
5. When you lose yourself in the cult of personality of another, you will lose yourself.
